While the other oils on our shelf tend to come in bottles with a pump, shea butter sits in a jar with a black lid. It has a good reason for that: at room temperature it is solid, and it only turns into a silky oil with the warmth of your palms. It comes from the fruit of the African shea tree and is organic and unrefined — it keeps its natural colour, its typical, characteristic scent and everything else it came with. Rich nourishment for the places that take the most punishment: heels, elbows, hands and cracked or rough skin.
Why unrefined shea butter?
Refining is a process that tames an ingredient — it evens out the colour and takes away the scent. In soaps, a quiet version like that makes sense to us, but here we want the opposite: a butter that has stayed true to itself. That is why we whip the same unrefined organic shea butter into our body butters too. One ingredient, no additives. Nothing extra, nothing without a reason.
How do you use it?
Scoop up a small amount, let it melt between your fingers and rub it into the skin. For something so dense, it absorbs surprisingly well — no need to worry about being sticky all evening. It has the most work to do in winter and after summer — whenever the skin on your hands and heels announces it has had enough. The jar lasts a long time, too: you use a pea's worth at a time, not a handful. If you have a nut allergy, it is better to be careful with shea butter.
The beige label with its delicate leaf pattern gives the game away: inside is a raw ingredient, not a composition.
