MAGICIE

A yellow body, a graphite tip, a black stripe and a petrol-blue end in place of an eraser — MAGICIE is a design soap shaped like a pencil that looks as if someone has just sharpened it and stood it on the edge of the sink. The dark parts are drawn by mineral pigments — black iron oxide, not charcoal; the scent is composed of bergamot, litsea cubeba and lemongrass essential oils — a clean citrus opening against a fresh green background — and the whole soap is vegan. You cannot write with it. It washes brilliantly.

How a soap pencil is made

Each colour is a separately mixed soap mass: the yellow, the blue and the black all come from mineral pigments — iron oxides, ultramarine, mica and titanium dioxide. We pour the layers into the mould one by one and cut the finished block with a wire — so the transitions between colours are never the same twice. It is not a production fault, it is handwork. How oils and sodium hydroxide turn into soap in the first place is written up in our article on saponification; in short: fats + alkali → soap + glycerine. And we leave the glycerine, which binds water, in the soap. We weigh the ingredients precisely — a soap recipe is not a guess but a calculation — and although the pencil looks playful, inside it is the same honest recipe as in every one of our soaps.

Children like the look of it, adults the feel of it in the hand — the lather is creamy, it washes gently and in a family bathroom it holds its own as a gift that needs no further explanation. Before it reaches you, it goes through our classic routine: the cold process and at least 30 days of curing on the shelf. Between washes, let the pencil dry out on a soap dish that drains, so that the tip stays a tip for as long as possible. You will find more shapes and ideas among our design soaps.
