Litsea cubeba sounds like a magic spell, but in reality it is a small tree from Asia, also known as May Chang. Its fruits smell like lemon and lime together — only sweeter, softer and without the sour bite. It comes in a 10 ml dark glass bottle as a 100% essential oil: undiluted, with no added fragrance, ready for a few drops in your diffuser.
Litsea cubeba: a citrus that does not grow on a citrus tree
Litsea essential oil comes from the tiny fruits of the tree, not from citrus peel — and that is exactly why its freshness is different: optimistic, playful, with no sharp edges. It stirs up stale air and gently helps your mood back onto its feet. Diffuse it in the morning over coffee, in the office between two meetings or in the bathroom instead of an air freshener — and there is nothing in the bottle but the essential oil. And yes, it is close in scent to lemongrass; litsea is the softer, sweeter of the two — leave the sharp green note to lemongrass.
Like every essential oil, it is concentrated: a few drops in the water of a diffuser or in the bowl of an aroma lamp are enough. Undiluted, it does not belong on the skin; keep it away from your eyes and store the bottle out of the reach of children. Close it tightly after every use — essential oils are volatile and evaporate readily. The scent stays fresh longest somewhere cool and dark — dark glass is the first step, a shady shelf the second.
