On the first lighting, give the wax time to melt all the way to the edge of the tin — that way the candle “remembers” a level surface and doesn't dig a tunnel in the middle. Give the charred wick a quick trim before each relighting and the flame will be clean and free of soot; the lid protects the wax from dust between burns.
